THINGS TO DO

Stroll flower-bordered garden paths, hike to a mountaintop for a spectacular panorama of sea and islands, or test your technical climbing skills on rugged stone cliffs.

Swim in not-so-warm lake waters or the brisk Atlantic. Cast a lure for mackerel or stripers. Slip a paddle into the water and canoe down a quiet river or kayak across the bay to an island campsite. Celebrate wind, water, and wind-powered ships on a Windjammer Cruise, and reach into a sea-life touch tank for a close encounter of the best kind.

Whatever the season - whatever is pleasing - you'll find plenty to renew your spirits and quicken your heart.

Here are just some of the things to see and do while in town for the wedding.

Artists and Artisans - The towns of Camden, Rockport, and Lincolnville, as well as the surrounding communities, are noted for the many skilled artists and artisans who make their homes here. Some work in traditional media using established methods, while others are breaking new ground. Their work may be seen in numerous local galleries, as well as at their studios, many of which are open to the public. One group puts out a guide to their work and also stages an annual open-studio weekend during which visitors are invited to come watch work in progress, browse, and shop.

  • Harbor Arts Juried Arts & Crafts Show - Over 80 fine artists and artisans display and sell their work in scenic Camden, Maine in this 22nd Annual show. Peak fall foliage provides a breathtaking backdrop.

  • Farnsworth Art Museum & The Wyeth Center - The best in American art of all eras, from the Colonial period through the present, is on view in the Farnsworth Art Museum's seven elegantly appointed galleries. The Wyeth Center is one of the world's most prominent venues for showcasing three generations of the Maine-related work of N.C. Wyeth, his son Andrew Wyeth, and Andrew's son, Jamie Wyeth -- the First Family of American Art. Adjoining the museum is one of the finest Victorian homes in the country -- the Farnsworth Homestead. Located in Rockland, the museum is open year-round. Admission fee.

  • Camden Opera House - Built in 1894, the Camden Opera House was once the tallest building in Knox County. The massive building was also home to several businesses and a businessman's club. Over the years, the Opera House has hosted town meetings, concerts, grand balls and a steady stream of notable performers such as Lillian Gish and Mae West.

Lighthouses - Lighthouses fascinate people with their history and the dramatic role they play in coastal life. There are nearly a dozen historic lighthouses in the area, located on stony points and nearby islands. Visitors can visit many of these by car, while others are accessible by ferry or sightseeing boats. A vacation centered on making a tour of these striking sentinels provides a window into our history and a perfect reason to get out and see spectacular seascapes.

Hiking and Biking - Whether you prefer to explore on two wheels or two feet, you’ll find plenty of routes to take in the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville area. There are mountain hikes and technical climbs, woods walks and seaside strolls. Our meandering roads are perfect for biking at whatever pace suits you. Enjoy a leisurely sightseeing spin past sturdy farmhouses, gardens, lakes, and meadows, or shift into high gear and speed over hill and dale on a day-long loop into the countryside and back again to the seashore.

Antiquing - Intriguing shops, fine galleries, and road-side barns throughout the area make this an antiquer’s paradise. From elegant treasures, to American primitives, to charming collectibles, a trove of items awaits discovery. The region also offers frequent country auctions, estate sales, and abundant Saturday-morning yard sales.

Shopping - This area is a treat for treasure hunters, with clusters of delightful small shops inviting browsers to discover their wares. In century-old storefronts along crooked streets, in welcoming wharf-front boutiques, and in country shops down quiet lanes, you’ll meet purveyors of the best of locally made crafts plus unique finds gleaned from around the world. It’s no wonder Mainers from larger cities, as well as visitors from far and wide, go out of their way to come here to shop.

Day Sails and Sightseeing Cruises - To really appreciate the beauty of the coast, you need to get out on the water. Climb aboard one of several sailing and power vessels that take passengers on two-hour cruises among the islands just offshore and point out such sea creatures as seals and porpoises as well as a variety of birds. You can even go out with a lobsterman and see how the catch is hauled.

Windjamming - A century ago, graceful schooners plied the coastal waters with cargoes of lumber, ice, and other local products. An impressive fleet of windjammers -- some originals and some loyal re-creations -- still sails from our harbors from spring through fall, but these days their cargo is passengers who want to experience the way it used to be. Come aboard for a long weekend or a week and learn how to raise the sails, navigate the protected waters of the bay, and set the anchor. There’s also ample time for reading, relaxing, photographing the stunning scenery, hiking ashore in each evening’s peaceful anchorage, and indulging in plenty of mouthwatering food.

Skiing - You feel rewarded for a good run down the mountain at any ski area, but at the Camden Snow Bowl, you’re also rewarded for the trip up the mountain -- with a panoramic view of Penobscot Bay and its snow-dusted islands. It’s the only ski area on the Eastern Seaboard offering spectacular views of the sea while you ski. If you like your skiing more down-to-earth, strap on your cross-country skis and schuss along trails that trace the water’s edge.

  • Camden Snow Bowl - Ten trails from beginner to expert with spectacular views of Penobscot Bay and the islands. Snowmaking machines, lighted trails, toboggan chute. Game fields, tennis courts, swimming and hiking in summer.
